Greg and Anna Davis spend a night on the North Norfolk Coast at The Chequers Inn in Thornham

It’s Monday afternoon, 27th of November. It’s cold, windy and wet. There’s nothing but doom and gloom around but a ray of sunshine is on the horizon, or to be more accurate, on the North Norfolk coast!

My wife Anna and I set off on the two-hour journey from Framlingham to discover another new route to get to North Norfolk using a sat nav in one of the works vehicles. As usual I decided to ignore the sat nav at various points in an attempt to shorten the distance and therefore journey time but guess what, yep, the sat nav was right in the first place (as usual). The journey inevitably took an extra twenty minutes longer than the sat nav had originally calculated so when will I learn just to trust them!

To rub salt into the wound, once we arrived I realised we could have spent that additional twenty minutes sitting by the cosy fire in the bar or log burner in the snug/lounge area at The Chequers Inn in Thornham. We were greeted with a big smile and some welcome warmth from the fires before being shown to our room, the Alder (one of the best rooms on offer). The rooms have four different grades available and are individual in their design. The decor in each room is to a very high standard and you can see that the refurbishment of the entire building just 18 months ago was heavily invested in. Our room came with a free-standing large deep bath so while Anna enjoyed a good long soak, I partook of a tipple of the complimentary sloe gin.

Dogs (along with their owners) can stay in some of the bedrooms, with other bedrooms being kept 100% dog-free for non-canine-lovers. The bar area is also dog friendly, giving The Chequers huge appeal to all the dog-walkers that come to the area. Bird watching is also a popular hobby as well as rambling and long walks throughout this area. With the beautiful North Norfolk coast on the doorstep, The Chequers is ideally placed to attract many visitors or to base yourself to do your own exploring.
