Beautiful bespoke jewellery made from silver, gold and platinum
How it all began
Will Bishop Jewellery Design was established 23 years ago by husband and wife Will and Catherine. Having originally trained as a sculptor, Will became interested in jewellery-making after a period of travel across East and South Africa where “everywhere you go they are making jewellery out of anything that comes to hand”. He was taught the basics by Catherine who had been studying jewellery making and, after completing a diamond setting course at The London Guildhall University, Will set up his business.
Expanding the company
Originally working out of their garden flat in north London, Will and Catherine they quickly established themselves. Through distributors including the Fashion Company YMC, Will’s work was sold in many boutiques and shops including Barneys New York and Liberty. Will and Catherine soon outgrew their one bed flat after the birth of their first child and moved to Boxford in Suffolk where Will’s grandparents had lived. Working from his picturesque studio he creates his own original and beautiful collections of jewellery in Silver, Gold and Platinum, incorporating precious and semi-precious stones.
He has had some very interesting commissions, having designed and made rings for Bono and Adam Clayton, and his work has been photographed on celebrities as diverse as Shirley Manson from Garbage to the presenter Claire Balding. A more recent interesting commission was a Pectoral cross and ring commissioned for the Bishop of Monmouth for her Consecration Ceremony.
Due to his training in sculpture Will has been able to turn his hand to many unusual commissions, from insects and flowers, a praying mantis brooch designed for the lapel of a top city lawyer to an objet d’art gold leopard with emerald eyes. Will’s fluid style and eccletic mix of influences, ethnic and Byzantine jewellery and his particular focus on surface texture make his jewellery very appealing to the eye, each piece being tactile and very desirable. In addition to this Will is adept at remodelling old, unworn, often inherited jewellery; transforming it into beautiful new pieces using the same materials and retaining the sentimental value.
